This article analyzes the concept of resilience used in the field of mental health and its possible repercussions in the Brazilian social context. The idea came from a reflection after training in mental health for teachers in a public school in São Paulo in 2020, where the universal validity of the concept “resilience” was questioned. The article questions how resilience seen as adaptive capacity can contribute to the maintenance of a hegemonic system, demanding more and more from the subject with the prerogative of being more “resilient”, as a compliment, without due consideration with the possibility of mental illness. From a phenomenological and hermeneutic view, how are the connections between “resilience” and what is expected of the human being in contemporaneity. Since resilience impositions are a political concept, like human suffering, despite its geographical and social differences, it can be shared and cared for, and resilience, in this sense, appears not as adaptation, but as understanding and resistance.
